Whistle Up

"Whistle Up" has been developed by Waikato Hockey Association in partnership with WILSS for their secondary school aged hockey umpires.

Student umpires that graduate from the programme will gain 10 NZQA credits at Level 3, Unit Standard 31388. (Carry out pre-event preparation and apply the rules of sport while officiating sports events).

The student umpires attend umpire training modules during the season and are required to umpire at least 20 games during that time.  The umpire trainer will observe at least 3 of these games and provide feedback to support their the students development process.

Student umpires are expected to complete the module assessments, keep a reflective diary and implement a personal improvement plan.

There is no cost for the student umpire and application forms can be accessed direct from Waikato Hockey Assoc at

Applications open in early April of each year and the programme runs between May and December.
