"Whistle Up" has been developed by Waikato Hockey Association in partnership with WILSS for their secondary school aged hockey umpires.
Student umpires that graduate from the programme will gain 9 NZQA credits at Level 3 (26223 & 21644). The student umpires attend umpire training modules during the season and are required to umpire at least 20 games during that time. The umpire trainer will observe at least 3 of these games and provide feedback to support their the students development process.
Student umpires are expected to complete the module assessments, keep a reflective diary and implement a personal improvement plan.
There is no cost for the student umpire and application forms can be accessed direct from Waikato Hockey Assoc at umpires@waikatohockey.org.nz
Applications open in early April of each year and the programme runs between May and December.
